Prairie Heat
Prairie Heat was one of the first of Baker's books that I readand it kept me coming back for more. Every time you figure out whatis going to happen the plot takes a different route. I loved the factthat she showed that love happens no matter how bad you don't want itto. If you are looking for adventure, thrills and of course romancethen this book is for you. A book I recommend and have reread myself.

Pridi by Pridi: Selected Writings on Life, Politics, and Economy
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (March, 2001)
Authors: Pridi Banomyong, Chris Baker, Pasuk Phongpaichit, Pridi Banomyong, and Pridi
Average review score:

An insight into the Life and Times of Pride Banomyong
Pridi Banomyong has always remained an enigmatic figure in contemporary Thai history---a lawyer who had once studied in France; a member of the so-called "People's Party" who led the civilian faction which overthrew the absolute monarchy during the coup d'etat of 1932; the man viewed by others as a dangerous communist because of his radical economic plans; the regent who headed the Free Thai movement during the Second World War and earned Thailand's non-belligerent status at the closure of the war in 1945; and the unfortunate Prime Minister who was forced to resign and, ultimately, go into exile following several of the political upheavals of the 1950s.
This book gives an excellent insight into the man who helped shaped Thailand's modern political history; into the thoughts and writings of a man who, although we might not agree with many of his ideas, is now deemed great, despite several attempts by the military dictatorships to censor him out and blame him for the assassination of King Ananda Mahidol.
Inside this book are the writings of a surely great man.

Excellent book
I am an engineer working on the design and analysis of offshore structures and risers. Recently I read through this book and was totally impressed by the clarity of its writing. Also, there are lots of informative figures that help me understand how offshore drilling is done. After reading it, I feel that I have a much more comprehensive knowledge about offshore drilling operation. This book deserves a 5-star rating.

An excellent easy-to-read introduction to oilwell drilling
Written in a simple language, this book is accessible to readers who are not specifically familiar with oilwell drilling. Numerous photographs and drawings make it a very accurate description of the equipment and activities on and around a land rig floor. Easy, enjoyable and very informative to read throughout.
Does not tackle offshore rigs or directional drilling.

Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators

Required reading for parents, suggested for others
Surprisingly, I'm almost finished reading this book, which I started last night. I picked it up on a whim because it was on the new releases shelf at the library. Honestly, I don't usually get far in such books, because they start getting into material that triggers flashbacks for me.

So far, this one hasn't. There haven't been any terribly explicit descriptions of molestation, so I'm okay so far. And yes, I did know most of what's in here, but I found some of the statistics interesting. The step by step way the book follows one predator after another, pointing out the warning signs that should have tipped parents off to the dangers their children were in, is interesting. I think it could be very helpful to many parents.

I wasn't aware that children who have been abused in any way (sexually, physically, emotionally, verbally) are much more likely to be abused again, even by completely different people in a totally different setting. They're more vulnerable. The same goes for children who have experienced the loss of a parent due to death or divorce, or have otherwise been traumatized - predators seek out the most vulnerable kids as their preferred victims.

And, unfortunately, being the child of an abuse survivor greatly increases the probability that a child will be the victim of abuse. In some, but not cases, the abuse is the parent. But in more cases, the abuser is someone who sees the damaged boundaries of the abuse survivor and takes advantage of them to gain access to the child. That's definitely of direct interest to me as an abuse survivor.

I recommend this book to any parent, but especially those who are abuse survivors or whose children may be especially vulnerable due to other circumstances. Teachers, Scout leaders and others who work with children may also benefit from reading this book.

Authors: Paula T. Trzepacz and Robert W. Baker
Average review score:

A must for psychiatry students and clinicians alike
During my first two years working in adult mental health, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource in my day to day practice. Not only is it an excellent dictionary from which to draw when writing MSEs, it also explains just about every mental state term that one might come across in psychiatry. It has also been a particularly good tool for use in teaching and student supervision. A must for the psychiatry reference library.

Quarrelling, They Met the Dragon
Published in Paperback by Avon (October, 1984)
Author: Sharon Baker
Average review score:

The Greatest Science Fiction Novelist You Never Heard Of
Sharon Baker was one of the most gifted writers ever to grace the genre of science fiction. She endows her characters with more human truth, her worlds with more intricate detail than most authors would be mentally--and emotionally--capable of. As her youngest son, I remember hearing the rythmic clicking of her keyboard in the wee hours of the night, only to be broken up by the occasional burst of triumphant laughter when her characters succeeded; or mournful sobs when one met his or her final fate. In order to create with integrity a world (Membliar) of beautiful slaves, vast technology, phanatical religion, and brutal war, Sharon would interview inmates at the King County jail in Seattle to endow her characters with the hardened edges that their innocent cores (modeled after myself and my three older brothers) did not possess. She would spend months interviewing scholars such as John Kramer at UW to validate her hard science, talking to physicians to refine her ideas on the metamorphic powers of the body, and sit down with my brothers and I to learn how we would behave in certain situations. The heroes and heroines of all three stories are horribly mistreated slaves running from oppressive masters and blood thirsty religious cults in hope of discovering love and salvation. They gain a stack of experiences along the way to their figurative and literal destinations, all the while the reader marveling at the characters growing depth and demensions. Her tale is one of love and loss; of life and death; of wrongdoing and redemption; good and evil. Had she lived but a while longer, Sharon Baker would have been a household name in the fold of Science Fiction lovers and writers. The truly great science fiction and fantasy writers--such as Tolkein, Dick, Huxley, McCaffrey--were great in that their story transcended the spectacle of action in order to present the reader with a powerful vision of who we are, where we've been and where we are going. The trilogy of Membliar (Quarrellng They Met the Dragon, Journey to Membliar, and Burning Tears of Sassaruumi is more than a fantastic story--it is a profound insight into the terrible, intricate beauty of life.
